April is National Car Care Month

April 5th, 2017 by

April means one thing in the automotive industry…  National Car Care Month! Winter is coming to an end, the weather is getting warmer and summer road trips are right around the corner. National Car Care Month is to remind you of the proper cleaning and maintenance that may have been ignored during the winter. It’s also allergy season, which is even more of a reason to get out there and do some spring cleaning..to your car!

Keeping your vehicle on track with its scheduled maintenance is the key to keeping your vehicle in good condition. Ignoring something “small”, such as an oil change, can eventually ruin the lifespan of your engine. Even simply changing your wiper blades every six months will ensure safety and visibility. Wiper blades can be worn down from the rough weather of the winter season.

Other things to keep in mind during the month of April is to be aware of the different smells your car may produce. Burnt Rubber, Hot Oil, Gasoline, Sweet Syrup, Burning Carpet, and Rotten Eggs are the 6 main vehicle warning smells you may be able to recognize.

Burnt rubber can indicate slipping drive belts or misplaced loose hoses rubbing against rotating drive pulleys. Hot oil can mean that your oil is leaking onto the exhaust system, and the smell of gasoline can indicate a gas leak. Syrup can be a sign of leaking engine coolant from a component within the car’s cooling system.

The smell of a burning carpet can indicate that there may be issues with your brakes. Issues with your brakes can be a serious safety hazard and should be checked out by a professional technician immediately. Finally, the smell of rotten eggs can mean that your catalytic converter is not converting hydrogen sulfide in the exhaust to sulfur dioxide properly (Be Car Care Aware).

With proper vehicle care; you can keep your car safe, dependable, and on the road longer (Be Car Care Aware). So throughout the month of April; get your car serviced, trust your nose and don’t ignore any of those warning lights that pop up on your dashboard!
